Studium Generale - Maria Barnas

Artist, poet and writer Maria Barnas focusses on how description shapes reality, and the potential and failures of language. She presented a solo exhibition last year at Annet Gelink Gallery. In this work the question was raised whether words can be trusted as carriers of anything solid.

In the context of the exhibition, and in her work in general, Barnas takes up the complex relationship between intention and interpretation of language as a source of possibilities, and contemplates this in the form of a wide range of poems, objects and films. She approaches language from different angles by presenting a variety of works.

Barnas works against the notion that language should have a specific form, aware of the fact that our grasp of reality is closely linked to the words we (don’t) choose to describe what we perceive as reality.
