‘Reprint Karel Martens’ exhibition at the KABK

From 7 March to 2 April 2015, the Royal Academy of Art hosts an exhibition featuring work by designer Karel Martens. In 2012 Martens (Mook & Middelaar, 1939) was awarded the Gerrit Noordzij Prize for typography and typeface design.

Exhibition

This exhibition is part of that prize. Martens’ practice is versatile and consists of designing and teaching. He has designed countless book formats for publisher SUN and is responsible for the design of the architectural magazine OASE, in collaboration with current and former students. He designs stamps and coins, graphical and typographical additions to buildings, and produces experimental printing techniques (monoprints). He started teaching in1977, first at ArtEZ, and later at prestigious design institutes such as the Jan van Eyck Academy and Yale University School of Art in New Haven (USA). Martens established the Typography Workshop, a Master’s degree programme in typography in Arnhem. This exhibition’s collection of objects, non-commissioned work and photos combined with commissioned pieces give visitors the feeling they are in Martens’ studio. The exhibition also includes a number of his monoprints. The focal point of the exhibition are Martens’ image-defining designs for architectural magazine OASE. It was designed together with the students of the TypeMedia programme at the KABK.

Publication

The exhibition features the publication Reprint Karel Martens, in collaboration with Roma Publications. This publication can be purchased for €25 in the KABK library and via www.romapublications.org
