KABK Photography at Unseen Amsterdam 2018

The Photography department of the Royal Academy of Art, The Hague (KABK) participates in the seventh edition of Unseen, showcasing the best work of our students and alumni, through publications that reflect the focus on storytelling and the professional approach embedded within the programme's curriculum.

A few 'photobook' highlights:

Unseen Dummy Award

In the shortlisted selection for this year’s Unseen Dummy Award, the photobooks of our Photography alumnae:

  • Hanane El Ouardani, The skies are blue, the walls are red
  • Muriel Schouten, Ways of Understanding, Voodoo/Vodun
  • Wiosna van Bon, Family Stranger

All shortlisted photobooks are featured in the Unseen Dummy Award Exhibition. The winner, whose photobook will be published by Lecturis and distributed internationally, will be announced on the 21st of September at 16.00.

Photobooks
Among the independent publishers housed at the Book Market of the Unseen Amsterdam, the Royal Academy of Art is present with photobooks by KABK alumni and teachers, among others: False Positives by Esther Hovers, Big Papi by Gilleam Trapenberg, LOT Docklands by Sem Langedijk, De Val by Samuel Otte and Warsand by Donald Weber.

Signings & Launches
The Book Market also offers a full programme of book launches, signing sessions and discussions with i.e. KABK alumni: Arjan de Nooy, Henk & Samuel Otte, Anaïs López and Photography teachers Vincent van Baar and Judith van IJken.

FOTODOK's Book Club - The Special Edition (Saturday 22, 13.45-15.00)
The popular live talk show led by photographer and co-head of the KABK Photography department Rob Hornstra in a Special Edition at Unseen with a ‘surprise’ factor guaranteeing engaging interviews about excellent brand new photobooks. (Limited places available)

The Photobook of Tomorrow (Sunday 23, 12.00-14.00)
Lotte Sprengers, co-head of the Photography department at the Royal Academy of Art, The Hague (KABK) participates in the discussion "Shaping the Field" on the role of a photobook in an emerging artists’ practice and the academies' agendas in developing the educational programmes supporting photobook production. The discussion will be followed by "Manifesto" presentations by among others KABK alumnae Eline Benjaminsen and Angeniet Berkers.
