Research is regarded highly at the Royal Academy of Art, The Hague (KABK). While it has always been a part of the practice of artists and designers, research in art and design has become increasingly important in recent decades.

Artistic research is the main focus at the KABK. This means that a lot of attention is paid to the role of thinking in the process of creation, to the students’ reflections of their own work process, and on the development of a (theoretical) positioning of his/her work.

Our educational programme is aimed at ensuring that our students acquire a research approach to their work. On a master's level we offer the Master Artistic Research programme dedicated to artistic research. Our collaboration with Leiden University offers Fine Arts students the unique opportunity to pursue a Double Degree. In collaboration with Leiden University we also offer performing artists, visual artists and (graphic) designers the opportunity to perform research in and through artistic practice via the international doctorate in art and design PhDArts.
