Wendelien van Oldenborgh

Work Field Commission

Wendelien van Oldenborgh is an artist based in Rotterdam.

Van Oldenborgh films communication and interaction between individuals, often against the backdrop of a unique public location. In her recent work cultural differences – such as those resulting from colonial ties – form the subject of public and social interaction. Through these “active interactions” between groups of participants, who simultaneously assume the role of performer and observer/listener, cinematographic footage as well as a scenography are created during a live event.

In 2017 van Oldenborgh represented the Netherlands at the 57th Venice Biennale (and concurrent programme at Witte de With, Rotterdam) with Cinema Olanda. Van Oldenborgh has participated in the Bienal de Cuenca (EC) 2014, 54th Venice Biennial 2011, 4th Moscow Biennial (RU) 2011, the 29th Bienal de Sao Paulo (BR) 2010, the 11th Istanbul Biennial (TR) 2009.

She has held solo presentations at the Showroom, London (UK) 2015, the Van Abbemuseum, Eindhoven (NL) 2010. She won the prestigious Dr A.H. Heineken Prize for Art in 2014; and since 2015 has been a member of the Akademie van Kunsten (Academy of the Arts, Royal Dutch Academy of Sciences).
