'The Witch is Back. The Which?'
Why do we have to think about The Wicked Witch of the West all of a sudden? She and her sisters have made a silent return in contemporary cinema and other filmic media, from Dave Eggers The Witch till Luca Guadagnino's remake of Suspiria. Is she the antagonist of our time?
A mirror or a premonition of powers to be unleashed and blood to flow? Or a reframed symbol for an age of reexamined forms of misogyny and female empowerment? And what does our new era of digital witchcraft, tell us about cinema as a transformational and alchemic art form?
Bio - Dana Linssen is a film critic (de Filmkrant, NRC Handelsblad), writer, thinker, lecturer (ArtEZ Academy of Theatre, HKU Audio Visual Media/Writing for Performance) from the Netherlands. She is the founder of the Slow Criticism Project and co-curator of the Critics' Choice at the Internationale Film Festival Rotterdam. Currently she is working as a "quarter master" for Fast Forward, a new talent and skills development institute in the Netherlands. According to her Twitter profile she is also a time traveller.
