Introduction:
Melting Matters sets out to promote the worthy cause of climate change through the medium of typography. With the climate crisis and theoretical frameworks of the Anthropocene in the public consciousness, Miller investigates the effect of global warming on polar ice caps. She created ‘icetype’, a new typeface whose letterforms were inspired by Arctic and Antarctic icebergs and snow. Using the ‘icetype’, Miller created a website that was designed to gradually disappear if people ignored it, mirroring how the polar ice is melting away due to human complacency. Miller’s work serves both as a powerful reminder of Earth’s fragility and as a warning that by ignoring imminent environmental threats our planet could be heading for destruction.
