Tradition, innovation and experiment come together in the courses offered at the Royal Academy of Art (KABK). We prepare students for a professional career, offering the knowledge, skills and attitude needed. Our students work independently and are given complex assignments, which prepare them for working individually or collectively as a fine artist or designer when they finish their course.

The KABK offers the following courses:

All courses have their own propedeuse (first general year). Acquiring this propedeuse allows students to continue to the main part of their course.

Master’s Degrees and Post Graduate Course
The KABK offers the Master in Design of Type and Media, the Master in ArtScience and the Master in Artistic Research.
Besides this, the KABK offers Industrial Design as a post graduate Course.

In cooperation with the University of Leiden the Master of Science in Mediatechnology and the Master of Science in Photographic Studies is offered.

Minors
The Academy of Creative and Performing Arts has developed minor programmes for students of Leiden and for students studying at the KABK or the Royal Conservatory (RC). A minor is a study program that students can take in collaboration with their course at the KABK or KC, and forms an integral part of the education. Students use the time set aside for the Individual Study Programme for their minors. The minor offered to students from KABK or the Royal Conservatory (RC) is: Entrepeneurship in the Arts. Via the Academy of Creative and Performing Arts it is possible to follow optionals in Leiden, to take a Master Programme Mediatechnology or Photographic Studies and to follow a doctorate research programme.

The Royal Academy has over 1000 students following a full-time or part-time course. They are guided throughout their course by over 180 teachers, 25 workshop administrators, and 25 general staff members. Most teachers work as designers or artists outside of the academy. This means that students are offered a realistic view of a professional career as well as good instruction. Twenty percent of students at the KABK are from a foreign country.

The KABK strives to educate her students at a high enough level to function both nationally and internationally. Guest lecturers strengthen our already apt teaching staff to achieve this.
