Interactive Media Design is a young department, launched to train students to become designers of interactive concepts and processes. Processes between people and processes between people and products. Ideas are the main product and that's why students at I/M/D initially think in non media specific terms, which will be captured into a concept and translated into meta-medial, multi-medial or cross-medial applications. I/M/D works with real cases and commissions, with a sharp focus on the International field of expertise. This is the reason the department uses the English language in all its courses. Especially because the need for media exceeding designers is constantly growing, Interactive Media Design provides a powerful fulfilment of the demands for the education of independent, social, conceptual creative and pan medial-designers.

Students learn to detect cultural, social, technological and economic trends in society and transfer them into new, promising concepts. During the study students will learn how to work with a variety of media (-techniques), in order to be able to communicate with specialists on a professional level and to apply these media in an optimal way. Just as important is to learn methods which enables the student to keep an overview of the process and to set goals and realize them, in such a way that the student constantly keeps checking that the working process is leading towards desired outcome.

After an extensive introduction of the divers media and techniques, the balance will shift towards the individual development of the student. Through media exceeding courses like Concept Development, Meta-Medial thinking and personal leadership, the focus will shift to "What can I do with this knowledge" and "Which role do I play". This does not mean that a student at I/M/D is an individualist, on the contrary. Being able to assess one's own qualities and those of others in order to come to an optimal form of collaboration, is an essential part of the preparation to enter the professional circuit. Many of the projects and assignments are being executed collectively, often with students from several years working together. This way the student is already working in a studio setting during his studies.

In order to keep informed on new developments and to deepen existing insights, I/M/D holds very close contact with the professional field. This is reached through the dialog with the teaching staff, the collective attendance of conferences (like C.C.C. and PICNIC), co- organizing symposia (MasterMundo) or by creating new knowledge- and inspiring networks (Pool of Masterminds). Besides this there is much room for organizing a challenging (international) internship.

So they are networkers who are able to easily manoeuvre in different circles, find knowledge in many things and who possess both a broad perspective as well as a widely branched network. And who have a distinct influence on the professional field and society. After the studies the I/M/D graduate settles as a independent communication specialist or takes an position at a large (commercial or non-profit) communication agency of department.

The parameters for the development of a renewing department like Interactive Media Design, will eventually reflect in the development of a rich and relevant set of competences. But for the duration of this process we have chosen not to handle a reflective approach but a projective approach towards the educational goals. This means we try to keep as close as possible to our original set of parameters without focussing too much on outcome. This way I/M/D will remain flexible, participatory creative/reacting and able to swiftly adjust its course if necessary.

The parameters of I/M/D are:
- Creativity and innovation
- New thinking
- The I/M/D staff and students have to work with real problems, real people and real conflicts.
- It should never be out of touch with what is happening in society.
- Students should be brave and take risks
- Creative, ambitious, curious, risk-taking, social engaged.
- The right balance between tradition and renewal.
- A unique educational program for young people who wish to make a positive difference in society.
- How do we best unlock the creative and innovative forces in each individual and in society as a whole?
- The study has had and should always have a direct link with the private, public and voluntary field.
-The idea is to help organisations and individuals master the capability for innovation and creativity, leveraging the I/M/D philosophy and methodology.
- Creating, testing, displaying, unfolding great ideas, products, services and learning.

The coordinators have the responsibility for the department's policy and all aspects which are directly connected to this policy. The staff reflects the content of the departmental policy and a broad professional set-up. A large number of the staff finds also employment in the professional field, where they work individually or collectively. By confronting the students with a wide variety of individual view-points and values, they will develop a positive yet critical stance towards the profession. Specific knowledge is offered in the form of Master classes, workshops and attending conferences.
