Editorial Photography and Commercial Photography are the two main fields of photography which you can follow in our Photography course at The Royal Academy of Art. During the foundation year of the Photography Programme, you have to choose one of the two fields offered. Editorial Photography depicts a documentary–like and journalistic approach of photography. It portrays issues which have social importance and a certain authenticity value for the target group of the photography medium. Commercial Photography is aimed at advertising photography and fashion photography. A commercial photographer takes pictures which generally serve a specific function and usually requires a considerable high technical level. Both Commercial and Editorial Photography posses an artistic component that enables them to adequately and artistically display their subjects.
The Royal Academy of Art prepares you for the contemporary professional practice in the photography industry. This requires a degree of professionalism, flexibility and functioning in several aspects. The contemporary photographer every so often operates in both the editorial and commercial fields and sometimes even within autonomous art. Using pressed media, film/video and electronic media does this. For this reason, we prepare you for all areas of the field of photography. This means that besides the core subjects of the photography course, such as documentary and photograph journalism, photographic and digital techniques, fashion and advertising; additional practical courses such as audiovisuals and films, including graphic design, are offered. A contemporary photographer has considerable technical knowledge about the functions and language disciplines of an image. Therefore, we offer a vast theoretical programme comprising of more than just art and the history of photography, but also film history, media theory and communication. The academic staff consists of young and experienced image-makers (photographers, film-makers, designers), picture critics (art and film historians) and picture editors (art directors). The Photography programme is offered as a full-time course. The part-time course is only Editorial. Both courses have a duration of four years.
