Smits graduated from the Royal Academy of Art, The Hague in 2010. His works were part of the Best of Graduates Show 2010 at Galerie Ron Mandos in Amsterdam. Since then his highly detailed drawings have succeeded to build a notable following of his work. Premiering at the Volta Show will be his first 3D-work entitled Capital One.
On June 9, 2013 Mayor Jozias van Aartsen opened the Couperus Poetry Tour in The Hague. The tour honours the 150th birth year of Dutch writer and poet Louis Couperus. Students of the Graphic Design Office 'DO' designed the nameplates and poems along the route.

On May 10th, Rien Monshouwer will bid farewell to the Royal Academy of Art, where he has been teaching since 1992. Along with around fifty academy alumni, Monshouwer will show works in Galerie 1, 2, and 3 of the KABK. In addition, a project with fellow teachers will be presented in the library of the academy.

Coding as skill for artists! Works from the ArtScience/C0d3l4b as well as some works from the contest to code the Victory Boogie Woogie, will be on show TUESDAY April 23, 16.00 hours in the Gallery.
During the night of 5 to 6 April a 25 meters long exposition table was cast that will serve during the 6th presentation of the Royal Academy of Art on the Salone Internazionale del Mobile in Milan. From Tuesday 9 April until Sunday 14 April, students will display their work and create new work 'on the spot' in the Live Factory and exhibition Make My Day.
On Thursday 4 and Friday 5 April 2013, NIOC will take place in Arnhem. Reba Wesdorp, research assistant at both the AR Lab and the research department IVT, has been selected to give a presentation about the research department's study on the use of new visualisation techniques at universities of applied sciences (hbo).

For the sixth year in a row The Royal Academy of Art in The Hague will present itself at the Salone Internazionale del Mobile in Milan. The presentation LIVE FACTORY MAKE MY DAY will take place in Ventura Lambrate from Tuesday 9 April until Sunday 14 April 2013. LIVE FACTORY MAKE MY DAY consists of three closely connected zones, which explore various notions of the production process. Students and alumni of the Royal Academy of Art, The Hague will experiment with raw materials, techniques and forms in the LIVE FACTORY production line. Daily performances will put to the test a human simulation of machines. Visitors can see the results of students’ research in a dynamic, continually growing exhibition.
Lieven van Velthoven and Scarlett Hooft Graafland will speak about their art projects on Tuesday the 21th of March. The lectures will be in Dutch.

The third Pop Up Gallery will take place on 21 March. Works by Fine Art students will be on show. Prior to the exhibiton, and orginised by Studium Generale, AR-artist Lieven van Velthoven will present his work and Scarlett Hooft Graafland is set to give her presentation entitled "Soft Horizons, realtime software, games and art".
On February 18th the Mondriaan Foundation announced the names of the fifty artists nominated for the Prix de Rome 2013. The artists were selected by a group of 35 scouts, comprising artists, critics and curators. Among the nominees are 7 former students of the KABK. On invitation by the Studium Generale, Rory Pilgrim will give a performance next Thursday March 14. Afterwards Koen Brams, editor of the encyclopedia of fictional artists, will present a lecture. The performance of Rory Pilgrim will be in English. Be on time, the doors will close at 15:30!
Last week students worked on a humorous art piece, with a touch of seriousness under the expert guidance of artists Marcel van Eeden. From 22 February to 1 March the created works are being exhibited in the Galerie of the KABK.
This Thursday the Studium Generale will host two lectures, one by Wouter Prins and one by Keetje Mans, in KABK STOOR. Afterwards, there will be drinks and a pop-up gallery organised by the AR-LAB. (lectures are in Dutch only)
After the busy and festive 1st AR Lab Pop Up Gallery on November 15, 2012, the 2nd edition opens on February 21, 2013 in the Bleijenburg hall (ground level) at the KABK. Works from Photography students will be on show and artists Keetje Mans and Wouter Prins will give a presentation about their work.
Marcel van Eeden graduated from KABK in 1993. Since then he’s been showing his work worldwide in high-profile exhibitions and installations. His workshop, that takes place in the gallery-spaces of the Academy, will focus on the possibilities of the use of humor in your own work. Afterwards, an exhibition with the produced work will open at the KABK Gallery.(22/2 to 1/3).
Op donderdag 14 februari van 15.30 tot 17.00 uur vertoont het Studium Generale van de KABK twee gefilmde portretten van beeldend kunstenaars in hun atelier, uit de serie de ‘Hollandse Meesters’. Net als vorig jaar zal Michiel van Nieuwkerk in gesprek gaan met de desbetreffende kunstenaar over ratio en verbeelding in hun kunstenaarspraktijk.
This Thursday February 7 from 15:30 to 17:00, the Studium Generale of the KABK will be showing two film portraits of Dutch artists in their studios from the Dutch documentary series: ‘Hollandse Meesters 2’. After the films Michiel van Nieuwkerk will talk to Eylem Aladogan and Juul Kraijer about ratio and imagination in their artistic practice.
The AR Lab of the Royal Academy of Art has cooperated with Studio Maaike Roozenburg on the Smart Replicas project for Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen. Graphic Design students have used Augmented Reality Techniques to design their new versions of antique tea cups from the Boijmans collection. This project will be presented during the annual design fair Object in Rotterdam to be held from 7 till 10 February.
This year the KABK is represented at the largest contemporary art fair in the Netherlands. Since 2000 Art Rotterdam has grown to become the international stage to showcase the current ‘state of the art’ in the Netherlands. Over ninety renowned and upcoming galleries from the Netherlands and abroad will present the latest tendencies in contemporary art. Works by alumni Thomas Raat (FA, 2001) and Hans van Bentem (FA, 1988) will be on view at the fair.
On Wednesday, Feb 6th, a group of students from various departments of the Royal Academy of the Arts The Hague (KABK) got started with the Research Lab Next Door. During this lab students research the public space of the Schilderswijk area in The Hague, working from local Design Research Station 22 (DRS22).
This year the Royal Academy of Art celebrates its 330th anniversary. The academy is the oldest existing art academy in the Netherlands. Through the digitization project ‘VeleHanden’ a long cherished wish of the KABK is being fulfilled: to disclose its broad and long history by mapping who taught and studied at the Academy.

The article 'The Augmented Painting: Playful Interaction with Multi-Spectral Images' was accepted for the ISMAR 2012 conference. AR Lab presented the research at the conference in Atlanta (5 - 8 November). ISMAR is the high standard International conference on Mixed and Augmented Reality.
During the AR Lab's stay in the United States in November 2012 for the ISMAR 2012 conference, the Lab had the opportunity to visit, on invitation, the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) New York and to meet with two of MoMA's staff.

The Noorderlicht International Photofestival 2013 aims to peer into what has caused our current state of affairs, particularly into the so-called '1%' and its financial and political power at the expense of the '99%'. On Tuesday November 27 at 19.00 the Royal Academy of Art (KABK) presents a special film evening "Between Absurdity and Reality" at EYE Amsterdam. A journey through the contemporary history of Poland and Polish city life based on a selection of video art and animations. The films illustrate the social and cultural transformation of the country since the 1970s and the evolution of Polish identity from the communist past to the postmodern present.
The final exam exhibition of the Royal Academy of Art, The Hague (KABK) ended on Saturday the 7th of July with a shower of prizes for the young creative talent who completed a KABK degree. Wendy Oakes (Photography) received the Aanmoedigingsprijs (encouragement prize) from Stroom Den Haag, Maarten Schenkeveld (Furniture Design) the Paul Schuitema Prize and Anton Lamberg (Graphic Design) the Royal Academy Prize. Marline van der Eijk received the Overduin Prize.
