During your study at the KABK you will be exposed to various types of study and activities. During the first year there is still a lot of group classes. You will experience ‘the field’ real soon, you will go on field trips, study trips and visits to exhibitions right from the start of your study.
Later on in your study there’s more focus on the individual student. But even then you function in groups with other students and follow workshops or work on projects together.
To give you an idea, below is an overview of the different types of study and activities at the KABK.
Theoretical Education
Theory classes are given in lecture halls or in one of the theory classrooms and readings are given in the auditorium. Individual sessions are primarily aimed at coaching students when writing their paper assignments and the final thesis. Furthermore, there are workgroups in which debates and discussions take place around contemporary and historical material, exhibitions and texts, and reports are held and personal statements are elaborated on.
Practical Education
Practical education takes place in different ways:
- Coaching and instruction for the whole group, usually during the first weeks of a course.
- Work meetings and progress meetings of teacher(s) and students together.
- Coaching at your work station: the teacher will visit you at your work place or your studio and will discuss your work. This can be done in an individual setting or in a group. Lots of students in their last years have their own work place within the Academy. Assignments are given and there is space for asking questions and for doing practical research. Also, some departments have group studios.
- Coaching in the work place: working independently in a workplace or with guidance from the workplace administrators.
- Individual meeting: the teacher will discuss work with individual students.
- Digital coaching: if face to face contact is not a necessity, Graphical Design and Interactive Media Design teachers will sometimes coach students through means of digital communication, with work that will eventually be available digitally.
Special Activities: workshops, projects, excursions and work weeks
Integrated in and in addition to the curriculum several special activities are organized: workshops, projects, excursions and work weeks. The organization of these special activities is largely in the hands of each discipline respectively, and so their character can differ. Workshops and work weeks have a special theme, subject or material as a starting-off point which is usually department-bound. Excursions generally have a specific goal such as visiting fairs, or can have a much broader character with visits to for example Berlin or the Biennial in Venice. These larger types of excursions are usually open to students from other disciplines. All costs for travel and boarding are charged to the participants. A contribution from the School Fund is a possibility, and will be distributed amongst the group as opposed to individuals. Students can give proposals concerning excursions, work weeks or workshops to the head of their department.
Other special activities are the activities organized by ‘t Hart and Studium General activities:
-
Activities ‘t Hart
‘t Hart organizes readings, movies, and discussions for and with
KABK
students. It also arranges for special discounts and prices to see special theater or opera productions. Information can be found at their stand in the Academy. For more information or to apply to help organize, please contact Christie van der Haak

.
-
Studium General
Studium General Activities are organized to broaden students’ horizons and to bring them in contact with cultural and social developments. All
KABK
students are invited to participate in the Studium General’s interdisciplinary activities to see what’s happening in the world around them, to be confronted with new ideas, but also to develop and or improve a critical view of their own discipline. The new Studium General program is published in September on the website.
Internship and other participation in the professional field
You will be gaining practical experience in an internship/training period with a company, institution or independent artist, designer or photographer. The Fine Arts’ department has less internships available but students will take part in external productions and projects.
Self study
As a student you will be working on your art or design work independently for a large part. This can be done at the academy or at home.
