All facilities are open to students and employees of the KABK. Students work in a modern complex with extensive resources like workshops, stores for materials and supplies, photocopying facilities and a library in which you can access a great number of specialized books, very old documents and the internet. An “internet wall” has been created in the canteen, where everyone can access the internet free of charge.

Studios and Workshops
The KABK has professionally equipped studios and workshops which are run by Workshop Administrators. Workshop Administrators are craftsmen who manage the workshop or studio and its safety. They also run the machines and can advise students about the materials.
Learning to use equipment in a studio is essential as students are required to be able to work independently. If a student has not had the proper instruction, the Workshop Administrator can prevent the student from working in the studio or workshop. The Workshop Administrator's role is to supervise students and offer advice. The opening hours are displayed at the entrance of each studio and workshop. The academy strives for flexibility and extensive opening hours with those of the academy itself. During vacations studios are closed.
Rules and regulations for studios and workshops:
- students can only use the workshops if the Workshop Administrator or another supervisor is present
- the Workshop Administrator determines whether a workshop has reached its capacity
- students who have scheduled classes in a studio or workshop have priority over those who don’t
- The Workshop Administrator determines whether a student has enough skills to work independently in the workshop or studio
- Each student using the workshop is required to keep to specific rules concerning regulations on machinery, tools, software, environment and safety
- Use of the workshop or studio is free; students must pay for used materials
As of the year 2007-2008 there are two workshop courses:
Introductory course (mandatory)
As mentioned earlier, students must be able to work independently in the workshops. During the introductory course you will receive explanation on how the workshops and studios work in general and how to handle certain machinery. We find it important to give you a good impression of the vast possibilities the workshops and studios offer. Therefore all functions are covered in the course. Also you will be informed on the rules and regulations for use of the workshops. This introductory course is mandatory.
Certifying course
There are certain safety risks in handling workshop machinery. Furthermore, some machines can be destroyed if they are used improperly. For this type of machinery a certifying course for each workshop has been developed. Training will be provided by each Workshop Administrator and in most cases your abilities to handle the machinery are tested before you can receive the certificate.
The course is given twice a year and the certificate expires after a maximum period of two years. For some machinery (e.g. machines that are substituted by a different type) this period is shorter.
Textile and Fashion Workshop
The Textile and Fashion Workshop is where students can develop and construct fashion and textiles. The nature of the studio is department-bound due to specialized skills involved. Students from other disciplines can make an appointment to use the studio. Before use students are asked to pay a basic material fee. The in-house fabric store allows KABK students to buy specialist materials at a friendly price.
Workshop Administrators: Beleke den Hartog and Elsbeth van Heynigen
Carpentry Workshop
The Carpentry Workshop is on the ground floor of the academy. Besides various woodworking machines, it has space for manual carpentry. Students are required to purchase materials themselves which can be bought from the workshop's large supply of different wood sorts.
Workshop Administrators: Hans van Alphen and Paul Dekker.
(070) 315 47 84
Metals Workshop
Located next to the Carpentry Workshop, the Metals Workshop offers various possibilities for reworking metals. Here students are also required to buy their own materials of which the workshop itself carries a limited supply.
Workshop Administrators: Huub Luik, Mik Verloop, Ruud van Bommel and Dennis Slootweg.
(070) 315 47 85
Graphics Studios
The Graphics Studios are located in the Bleijenburg building and offer the opportunity to do etchings, lithographs, screen printing and wood and linocuts. The equipment necessary for various techniques is available (presses, rinsing and drying machines). Studios also function as classrooms for graphics teachers. All materials can be purchased at Goedman in the academy's basement.
Workshop Administrators: Willem Meijer, Niek Satijn, Gerard Schoonveld, Inez Smit and Poedjio Widodo.

(070) 315 47 83
Photography Studios and Darkrooms
Throughout the Prinsessegracht building students will find various small and one large photography studio. All the necessary equipment can be found there, such as cameras, lighting and backdrops.
The darkrooms are situated in Bleijenburg. Here students can develop, print and enlarge black and white photographs. On the same floor facilities for developing black and white and color negatives can be found.
Worskhop Administrators: Eduard Sjoukes (coordination, e.sjoukes@kabk.nl), Frans de Grood (f.degrood@kabk.nl), Theo de Rijke (t.derijke@kabk.nl), Andrew Valkenburg (a.valkenburg@kabk.nl) and Mik Verloop.
(070) 315 47 86
Photography Studio
In the Photography Studio students can experiment with photographic techniques such as historical photographic procedures, photographic manipulation (toners, bleaching, coloring, etc)- in short, everything a student needs a way of personalizing their photography.
This studio also offers the opportunity to make cyanotypes and gum prints on aquarelle paper by using a digital negative. Cyan typography is one of the oldest methods of photography. Originally (1840 and later) it was used as a reproduction technique for text and technical drawings, and is also referred to as blueprinting. A gum print is made by mixing pigments and Arabic gum that has been made light sensitive. The historical techniques, computers and Photoshop create new possibilities which would certainly be appreciated by Berssenbrugge. Students are encouraged to experiment with both techniques and to combine it with for example graphics, drawing and painting.
Opening times: Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday from 13:00 to 17:00. Mondays reserved for class. From January 2007 reserved for Graphic Design classes. Tuesdays reserved for faculty use. Wednesdays reserved for Individual Course Program.
Studio Administrators are Inez Smit, Marijn Rietveld and Theo de Rijke
.
Room of the Future
This studio is for the high end finishing of digital images. There are 30 iBooks for either instruction or lending to students.
Workshop Administrator: Eduard Sjoukes
Computer Workshop and Computer Classroom
The KABK has excellent ICT equipment, mainly Apple Mac, but also PCs with Windows. Unfortunately students cannot use all software on all computers, as the number of licenses is limited. The computer workshop also offers students the opportunity to work with various different programs for Graphic Design, Interior Design digital image reworking, digital photography and pattern designing. There is also a computer classroom which is used for (class) instruction in various software.
On the ground floor next to the computer room students will find opportunity to print and copy in various sizes and on different kinds of paper, transparents and even textiles.
Studio Assistents: Constant Meeuws, George Vincentie (coordinator) and Frits de Vries.(070) 315 47 88/(070) 315 47 89

Canteen
The canteen is open Monday through Friday from morning until evening (opening times can be found in the canteen itself). Besides buying food and drink, students can also enjoy their own food from home there. The canteen serves hot meals in the evening, and there is a terrace attached so that students can sit outside.
The canteen also has internet- both a wireless connection and a stationary “internet wall”. Students and teachers often hold meetings there.
Our canteen is run by Avenance Catering. The school has made agreements concerning pricing, assortment and opening times. All visitors are required to clean up after themselves and to return trays, cutlery, glasses etc. to the buffet after use. For the hot evening meal there is a small deposit that you get back after returning plate and cutlery.
For ordering things such as lunches for meetings there are separate rules known to the catering staff and head teachers. When the canteen closes, there are various vending machines with snacks and drinks.
Gerard Hali, responsible for general organization, is also the contact person for the canteen and can be reached for suggestions concerning assortment etc.

Use of the Building
Students and teachers are encouraged to make lively use of the academy building, but are expected to treat it with respect so it is there for the next generation of students to enjoy. After exhibitions we expect the academy to be left in the same condition it was found in. Walls should remain white, and temporary changes should remain temporary. The academy operates on the two opposing principles that damage should be avoided at all costs, but that everything should be possible. The balance between the two can be found by communicating projects on time with course coordinators who may need to discuss the idea with the Facilitary Service.
Use of Work Spaces
Almost all Graphic Design, Fashion and Textile and Interior Design students work in their classrooms. (Fulltime) Fine Art students have an individual workspace in their later years at the academy which is assigned to them by their coordinator. Coordinators and students negotiate the care of the workspace between them. This includes a down payment, which the student will get back at the end of the year if no damage has been done to the workspace in question.
The most important rules concerning workspaces are:
- Students are responsible for cleaning their own workspace.
- Coffee pots, kettles etc are prohibited. They can be a fire hazard, as they may overload the circuits.
- If students smoke in their workspace, they will lose this space.
- The KABK is not responsible for stolen or damaged property or work.
Use of Storage Space
Classrooms are equipped with storage facilities such as drawers and cupboards, and more and more classrooms house rows of lockers. Some classrooms have special storage units for sculptures and paintings. There are more storage units in the basement of the academy for certain groups of students. Students who would like to make use of the units can contact the Facilitary Manager who can tell them if and where storage is possible.
General rules for using storage units:
- Work must be taken home after collective assessments
- At the end of each academic year, all work must be taken so that the academy can start the new year with sufficient storage space
- The KABK has the right to remove work from the building a week after the last assessments should there not be a valid reason for it being there (students can contact Facilitary Services for the latter)
- The KABK is not responsible for theft, damage or loss of possessions/work in storage units
- Keys to the locked storage units in the basement can be found at the reception.
Exhibitions/Presentations
Well-presented work is an essential part of an artist’s or designer’s career, whether it is an exhibition or a presentation. The KABK encourages students to present their work effectively. Students learn the difference between the two as they continue their course.
Assessment presentations
Individual and Collective Assessments are a mandatory part of the course curriculum and the presentation is considered very important. The collective assessments involve widespread use of classrooms and halls throughout the academy and are coordinated by head teachers or department coordinators. You should always book a space in advance through
boekingen@kabk.nl
.
Exhibition Spaces
There are lots of ways and places to exhibit or present work within the academy. The KABK gallery consists of three interconnected spaces and is meant for internal and external use. The old staff room is often used by Fine Art students. They organize exhibitions every week.
There are many more possibilities in the Bleijenburg building and even outside. Should students want to exhibit in a space they have not been assigned to, they can make reservations through the Bookings Office. In order to book the gallery students should go through Linda Braber, our Production Assistant. Classrooms that are not being used for classes can also be reserved. Students should be aware of the fact that most bookings are made far in advance, so decide and reserve on time! This should be discussed with head teachers or coordinators prior to booking. Reservations should be made at least three days in advance, and can only be called official once the student has received a confirmation. Students are not allowed to use spaces without booking, and teachers, in most cases, cannot authorize the use of a room without a booking.
Rules for exhibiting/presenting
- A presentation or exhibition can only take place if a plan of action has been made which states where, when and how long the show will be on and which facilities are required. The plan must be approved by the head teacher or coordinator and must be coordinated with a production assistant.
- After approval, the Facilitary Service will tell you what is allowed within the space with reference to environment, equipment etc.
- Exhibitions in the main halls of both Prinsessegracht and Bleijenburg and the gallery can only be planned in collaboration with the Production Assistant and with permission from the head of the school.
- In some cases the KABK will ask for a down payment for the use of space, equipment, etc.
- Every presentation must have the student’s name(s), class and department clearly stated.
- The space used must be left in the same state in which it was found.
- Students are responsible for cleaning/tidying/restoring the space to its former state.
- The KABK can not be held responsible for missing or damaged work.
- Damage or costs bound to presentations that have not been cleaned up will be charged to the student concerned.
Auditorium
The auditorium can be found in Bleijenburg. It has extensive audiovisual facilities and is used for lectures and presentations. Reservations for use of the auditorium should be made well in advance, as it is often used by both internal and external parties.
Rules and regulations for the Final Exam Exhibition
Final exam candidates present their final work or part of it at this exhibition. Its date can be found in the calendar. The exhibition is normally held in the academy, but occasional exceptions are made.
- The KABK can require a down payment or rent to participate in the exhibition, and a further fee for the use of space, facilities and equipment. Students are charged for used materials.
- Ultimate responsibility for all aspects of the exhibition lies with the school.
- A failed candidate will be asked to remove his or her display from the exhibition.
- Candidates are responsible for setting up and taking down their own part of the exhibition. They are supervised by the departments' teachers.
- Should a candidate not participate in the latter, they will be charged the costs of having it done.
- Damage to the building or it’s contents will be charged to the person who caused it.
- The KABK is not responsible for theft, damage or loss of work or property belonging to exhibiting students.
- The selling of work should be done under supervision of teachers, and the academy reserves the right to determine a maximum price.
- A student can only participate in the exhibition once.
- A student's work can be documented in the exhibition’s catalogue only once.
Timetables, office schedules and bookings
All of the KABK’s schedules are made at the office run by Gerard Hali. At the beginning of each academic year all class schedules are published online on the school website under “Schedules”. Students can print them out at home. Checking schedules regularly is recommended, as changes can occur. An academic year is divided into two semesters, which each consist of two blocks. The first lesson of the day starts at 8:50.
For questions concerning schedules, please contact
boekingen@kabk.nl
Use of classrooms by teachers and students
Teachers and students are required to keep to the classrooms assigned to them by their schedule. Changes to the schedule can be temporary or permanent, and are communicated to head teachers when they occur. As the timetables are very complex, unscheduled changes of classroom can cause problems. Students and teachers are therefore prohibited from changing classroom without consulting the Bookings Office. It is also prohibited to remove furniture from classrooms. After lessons, classrooms should be left in a tidy condition and all lights turned off and windows closed to preserve energy.
House rules
House rules concerning environment, safety and smoking are the following:
- Due to national law, the academy is a non-smoking area. Inspections are carried out regularly, and offenders will be charged the whole fine.
- It is prohibited to move or remove furniture from classrooms without permission from head teachers or coordinators.
- It is prohibited to drill holes or put nails in the walls, parts of the building or the furniture without permission from the Facilitary Services.
- It is prohibited to ride bicycles or skate in the academy building or on its premises.
- It is prohibited to bring animals (pets) into the academy.
- (Intentional) Damage to the building and furniture will be charged to the offender. Graffiti is seen as intentional damage.
- Environmentally damaging chemicals like leftover paint, solvents, fixatives and developers must be deposited in the allocated containers. It is strictly forbidden to wash them through the sink or toilets.
- Emergency exits may never be obstructed.
- All halls, stairways, and other walkways should remain unobstructed.
- The automatic closing doors should remain always unobstructed.
- Fire extinguishers and alarms should remain visible and accessible at all times.
Parking bicycles and cars
Parking space at the academy is limited. Therefore we have strict rules. Those who break them will be charged a fine. Certain staff members with special needs can apply for a parking permit at the school director’s office. Incidental parking is only allowed after the head of the Facilitary Service has given permission.
In front of the building students can find an bicycle rack. Using the locked bicycle garage in the basement involves a down payment, which can be paid at the Facilitary Service. It is not allowed to park bicycles in or around the academy.
Calamities
Various members of staff at the academy are trained to assist in case of an accident or perform First Aid. Those who can perform First Aid are Hans van Alphen, Frans ten Bosch, Elsbeth van Heijningen, Kees Knijnenburg, Huub Luik, Jolanda van Os, Marijn Rietveld, Eduard Sjoukes and Mik Verloop.
Those who can assist in an accident are all members of the Facilitary Service, and most of those named above as First Aid performers.
(Freight) Elevator
There is a public elevator in the Bleijenburg building which everyone can use. In the Prinsessegracht building there's a freight elevator that only works with a key from the reception.
