Graphic Design

On 4 February 2014, Graphic Design student Tereza Rullerová (1987) has been awarded by the Dutch Ministry of Finance a grant of EUR 500 for her project Dutch Education, contributing to the exhibition What’s inside the ‘koffer’?. The jury commended not only the high quality of her video clip, but also the successful interdisciplinary execution and her courage to pose tough questions like ‘Does your government have it under control?’.

The Ongoing Conversation
Series of one-day exhibitions at 1646

Artistic Research (ma)

Second year Master Artistic Research students participate in the exhibition series The Ongoing Conversation at 1646. The project offers a series of fast-paced one-day exhibitions, conceived as a dialogue rather than a series of isolated events. During three weeks the exhibition spaces will become a stage for orchestrated ambiguity, paradox, spectatorship and theatricality. From Melville to Wikipedia, from post-colonial questions to universal issues as love and death; all of this will be explored and performed in six mini solo-exhibition events. Featuring a range of international artists, all participants of the Master Artistic Research programme in The Hague, each exhibition is complemented with an invited guest who will lecture, perform or participate.

Kianoosh Motallebi graduated in 2006 from the Fine Arts department of the Royal Academy of Art, The Hague. His work will be presented in a group exhibition 'Dread – Fear in the age of technological acceleration 'in De Hallen in Haarlem that will open this Friday September 7th. Dread will show works in diverse media that in various ways represent the fear of the future. With among others Kianoosh Motallebi, Thomas Hirschhorn, Alicia Framis, Laurent Grasso, Roger Hiorns, Micol Assaël, Berend Strik, Carl Michael von Hausswolff, Sarah van Sonsbeeck, James Bridle, Gert Jan Kocken and James Beckett.

Victor Yudaev is nominated for the Start Point Prize 2013

Victor Yudaev graduated last June from the Fine Arts department. After his graduation he got nominated for the StartPoint Award 2013. Every year StartPoint explores 34 art schools from 16 European countries in order to select the most interesting graduation projects. Tomorrow a group exhibition of these selected artists will open in DOX Center for contemporary art in Prague. The main exhibition is followed by other selective exhibitions in the Zwarte Zaal of KASK in Gent, at the Victoria Art Center in Bucharest and in the Open Gallery in Bratislava. On the day of the opening of the exhibition, the international jury awards the main prize and several honorary mentions. All the prize holders are awarded a month-long residency in Prague together with an exhibition in the following year; the main winner also gets the production of his/her own catalogue.

Alumnus Rik Smits part of Volta Basel

Smits graduated from the Royal Academy of Art, The Hague in 2010. His works were part of the Best of Graduates Show 2010 at Galerie Ron Mandos in Amsterdam. Marieke Schoenmakers new Director of the Royal Academy of Art, The Hague.

As of 1 January 2014 Marieke Schoenmakers has taken up her appointment as the new Director of the Royal Academy of Art, The Hague (KABK). Next to this she has taken a seat on the Board of Governors of the University of Arts, The Hague. Henk van der Meulen, Director of the Royal Conservatoire and currently Deputy Chairman of the Board of Governors will take up the role of Chairman on the same date. Marieke Schoenmakers will succeed Jack Verduyn Lunel, who will retire in January 2014. The Supervisory Board, the KABK and the University of Arts, The Hague, have all expressed their pleasure at this appointment. Chairman of the Supervisory Board Sjoerd Eisma: “With her professional experience in arts education and her affinity with design and the visual arts, we at the Royal Academy of Art believe we have found an inspirational new Director.”

Bachelor's degree programmes rated ‘good’ and mainly ‘excellent’; Master's programme Type and Media rated ‘excellent’!

A panel made up of eight international experts from the world of fine arts and design visited the Royal Academy of Art, The Hague (KABK) in October 2013 under the chairmanship of Prof. Janwillem Schrofer, former president of the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam. They assessed each study programme according to three standards, with possible scores including unsatisfactory, satisfactory, good and excellent. This week, the panel gave their final assessment: the Bachelor in Fine Arts (ArtScience and Fine Arts departments) received two scores of ‘good’ and one ‘excellent’ and the Bachelor in Design (Photography, Graphic Design, Interactive/Media/Design, Interior Architecture and Furniture Design and Textile and Fashion departments) was rated ‘excellent’ three times. The Master of Design in Type and Media was also assessed by an international panel in October. The panel was chaired by Prof. Erik Spiekermann, acknowledged internationally as one of the leading experts in typefaces and typography. The panel also rated Type and Media ‘excellent’ three times.

27 photographers presented their work to the general public and a jury of professional photography reviewers on the Portfolio Review during the Duesseldorf Photo Weekend 2014. Heads of Graphic Design & Interior Architecture and Furniture Design department design new Dutch two euro coin

Roosje Klap (Head of Graphic Design) & Claudia Linders (Head of Interior Architecture & Furniture Design) designed the third commemorative two euro coin within the context of 200 years Kingdom of the Netherlands. Out of a selection of 11 design proposals, Linders’ and Klap’s proposal was chosen as the winning design. On 25 November 2013 the new eurocoin was presented to the public by the vice president of the 'Raad van State' Piet Hein Donner.

Last Sunday April 21st the NTR programme Kunststof TV announced Femmy Otten the winner of the Volkskrant Beeldende Kunst Prijs 2013. Femmy Otten graduated in 2004 from the Fine Arts department of the Royal Academy of Art The Hague. This prestigious award for young and in the Netherlands residing artists is initiated by Dutch newspaper De Volkskrant, Dutch broadcasting NTR and the Stedelijk Museum Schiedam.
